World Carfree Day September 22, 2008

Green motoring enthusiasts around the world are gearing up for World Carfree Day on Monday, September 22. This event takes place annually on September 22 and is a product of the international organization, the World Carfree Network. People in countries around the world have activities planned to promote alternatives to automobiles.
United States Highlights
In San Jose, California, eBay, Inc is encouraging employees to commute to work by providing reimbursement for mass transit fees. In addition, employees that commute to work will be eligible for a variety of prize giveaways.
Organizers in the Washington, D.C. metro area are hoping to have ten times the participants as compared to the 2007 event. In 2007, 1,000 people made the commitment to go car free on 9/22. This year, the goal is 10,000 participants. If you are in the Washington D.C. area, check out Carfree Metro D.C.
Carfree Events in Toronto
Cities across Canada have already had their car free celebrations or are gearing up for one. Residents of Toronto can participate in a Streets are for People sponsored event. On Sunday, September 21, cyclists are gathering at Bloor and Spadina at 4pm and will meet up with parade-goers at Trinity Bellwoods Park and then they will progress to a street party. For specifics on this event, visit the Streets are for People site.
Events are also planned in Asia, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region – to find details on an event in your area, or add one of your own, check out the World Carfree Day Wiki.
I think I am actually going to be able to go carfree on Monday. I live in a more rural area of my metropolitan area and there is zero mass transit in my area. However, my son’s school is within walking distance and I have rescheduled other appointments that I have. How many of you are going to join thousands of people across the world by going carfree on Monday?
