Will Lexus Eventually Have a Hybrid Only Lineup?

Lexus, the luxury arm of Toyota Motors, already has three hybrids in its lineup; the RX Hybrid for sports utility vehicle fans, the GS Hybrid as its mid-priced luxury hybrid and the top of the line Lexus LS 600h L. Additionally, Toyota announced its plans to create a new Lexus hybrid based off its best-selling Toyota Prius Hybrid during the 2008 Paris Motor Show.
According to a report appearing on the Reuters website:
“The report on Nikkei’s website said hybrids are currently available for the LS and GS models, making up about 10 percent of all Lexus vehicles. It quoted Furutani as saying in the medium to long term, Toyota was “considering making the Lexus lineup hybrid-only.â€
I think this is a very forward-thinking statement but not surprising coming on the heels of one of Toyota’s worst months for new car sales. In September 2008, Toyota sold 32.3% fewer vehicles in the United States than the company sold in September of 2007. Lexus figures were also down.
