Hybrid Supercars: The Tesla Roadster and Ferrari F430
These aren’t your momma’s hybrid cars. They’re not my hybrid car either but they sure look hot! The Tesla Roadster and the Ferrari Hybrid project are geared towards those with money to spare and a desire to reduce their vehicle’s carbon footprint. If you’re extremely wealthy, or plan to be one day, one of these two hybrid supercars may be the car for you.
Tesla Roadster
Reservations are being now for the Tesla Roadsters – interested customers can make a reservation directly on the Tesla Motors website. Before you click on through, you may want to take a look at the numbers. The base price is $109,000 – not bad for a supercar. You’ll need to plop down a cool $5,000 to start the reservation process and an additional $55,000 to lock in your reservation spot and receive a delivery timeframe.
So what does this $109k get you? The Tesla Roadster boasts a 3.9 second 0-60 time, a 13,000 rpm redline and approximately 220 miles per charge. This all-electric vehicle claims to earn the equivalent of 256 miles per gallon.
Ferrari F430
Ferrari engineers have designed a new Ferrari F430 BioFuel Concept car. Ferrari’s joining the ranks of other smaller auto companies in Europe working on alternative fuel vehicles due to Europe’s strict carbon emission laws (soon to be implemented).
According to an article published on FoxNews.com, “Instead of using a battery and electric motor like a typical hybrid, the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) being introduced in Formula One next season uses a mechanical flywheel that stores energy under braking, then reverses the process to assist the gasoline engine under acceleration.“
Ferrari fans looking to go green will need a bit of patience as initial forecasts are showing that a Ferrari hybrid won’t be publicly available until 2015. For a company like Ferrari that pays attention to every minute detail, this timeline is understandable.
These are only two eco-friendly supercars that have been in the news lately. Others include the Scorpion Hybrid Supercar, a new supercar concept from Toyota and a hybrid version of an Apollo supercar which ran in the Nurburgring 24 hour race. Although a hybrid supercar is likely never to be in my budget, it is still great to see alternative fuel vehicles available at all price points.
