The Greenest Vehicles of 2009

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy has released its Greenest Vehicles of 2009 list. The Honda Civic GX, a compressed natural gas-powered vehicle, takes the number one spot yet again. Although the fuel efficiency of the vehicle is rated at 24mpg in the city and 36mpg on the highway, the vehicle has a green score of 57.
“We estimate pollution from vehicle manufacturing, from the production and distribution of fuel and from vehicle tailpipes. We count air pollution, such as fine particles, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and other pollutants according to the health problems caused by each pollutant. We then factor in greenhouse gases (such as carbon dioxide) and combine the emissions estimates into a Green Score that runs on a scale from 0 to 100. The top vehicles this year score a 57, the average is 30 and the worst gas-guzzlers score around 14.” (Source: ACEEE’s Green Book)
The other vehicles that made the list are the Toyota Prius (Green Score: 53), Honda Civic Hybrid (Green Score 51), smart fortwo (Green Score 49), Toyota Yaris (Green Score: 46), Nissan Altima Hybrid (Green Score: 46), MINI Cooper/Clubman (Green Score: 45), Chevrolet Cobalt XFE/Pontiac G5 XFE (Green Score: 45), Honda Fit (Green Score: 45), Chevrolet Aveo/Aveo 5 (Green Score 44), Toyota Camry Hybrid (Green Score: 44) and the Kia Rio (Green Score: 44).
