The Green Cars Ride and Drive at the LA Auto Show

To jump start the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show, accredited members of the press will be allowed to participate in the green cars ride and drive that allows them to test drive a variety of alternative fuel vehicles. At this year’s ride and drive event, more than 25 cars will be onsite representing 11 different auto manufacturers from North America, Europe and Asia.

These lucky members of the press will be able to drive cars that are making their world debut at the 2008 LA Auto Show as well as other hard to find alternative fuel vehicles. The following cars will be for test driving available at the event: Honda FCX Clarity, GM Equinox fuel cell vehicle, and the i-MiEV by Mitsubishi and many more.

“In addition to showcasing new technologies, the Ride and Drive will feature demonstrations from the Auto Alliance’s EcoDriving instructors as part of a nationwide consumer awareness campaign. The EcoDriving program is designed to educate consumers about simple ways to save money at the gas pump, reduce fuel use and cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions today, regardless of the vehicle they drive.” (Source: PR Newswire)

The ride and drive event hopes to not only bring attention to the benefit of alternative fuel vehicles but also to the EcoDrivingUSA website. The EcoDrivingUSA website offers a savings calculator, ideas on how to be an EcoDriver with your current vehicle, a virtual road test and a variety of other educational tools. As of this post, only Colorado and California have officially joined the EcoDriving Movement.

Here are a few examples from the EcoDriving Practices tip sheet:

  • Avoid rapid starts and stops
  • Avoid idling
  • Maintain a steady speed (this is where I love having cruise control)
  • Use the highest gear possible
  • Avoid air conditioning use under 40 mph
  • The website also offers a tip sheet for vehicle maintenance; the tips are designed to not only reduce the vehicle’s carbon dioxide emissions, but also to help keep your vehicle in shape for the longest possible time.

  • Use the recommended motor oil
  • Ensure that your gas cap is on tightly
  • Remove luggage racks, etc when not in use
  • Change your air filters on a regular bases
  • Maintain your tire pressure
  • Events like the ride and drive opportunity are a great way for the press to help get the word out about not only alternative fuel vehicles but what consumers can do, right now, to increase fuel efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Note: Just before the ride and drive event starts, the Green Car Journal’s 2009 Green Car of the Year will be announced.
