Tesla Motors to Make Four Door Sedan

Lots of exciting news has come out of Tesla Motors over the past few weeks including the addition of a four-door sedan to the company’s electric vehicle lineup. The sedan will be manufactured at the company’s newest location (under construction) in North San Jose. In addition to being the home of the Tesla Model S, the campus will also hold the company’s research and development division as well as become Tesla Motor’s corporate headquarters. The new facility should be receiving the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) gold certification.

From the Tesla Motors website:

“The plant will produce the Model S, Tesla’s zero-emission, five-passenger luxury sedan powered by a lithium-ion battery pack. It is expected to have a base price of about $60,000 and get about 240 miles per charge with exceptional performance. The first sedans will likely roll off the assembly line in late 2010. Tesla will be able to produce at least 15,000 sedans per year – up to 30,000 if we add a shift.”

The price point is competitive for a luxury vehicle. The Chevrolet Volt, with a similar release timeline, will come in with an estimated $40,000 price tag. By comparison, the 2009 Cadillac Hybrid Escalade, a luxury SUV, has a $70,000+ manufacturer’s suggested retail price.

In other Tesla news, the Paris Motor Show has three Tesla Roadsters on site. Two of the Roadsters are part of the Sora composites booth and the third is part of the EV Village
