Mississippi Toyota Prius Plant on Hold

Toyota PHEV

As gasoline prices plummeted, so did the sales of the Toyota Prius. In November, Toyota posted an overall decline in sales of 33.9%. The Toyota Sequoia SUV was up by 52% when compared to October 2008 but the Toyota Prius posted a 48.3% decline in sales. Just six months ago, there was a wait list for a new Prius and used Prius owners were able to increase their asking price.

Toyota has now made the decision to stop the construction on the Mississippi plant that is being built to build the Toyota Prius. The building is nearly complete but plans to install the equipment have been temporarily cancelled.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding the people of Mississippi have shown in recognizing this is an extraordinary and unprecedented time for the auto industry,” Toyota said in its statement. “We are committed to completing the Mississippi plant when market conditions allow.” (Source: Detroit Free Press)
