The 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show featured exciting reveals, the announcement of the 2009 Green Car of the Year and even a design challenge. The winner of the Design Challenge Motorsports 2025 contest went to Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) for its KAAN – a futuristic electric racecar.

“Inspiration for the KAAN comes from electric fields and textures seen in nature, particularly those in a lightning bolt. The car is uniquely designed around its powerful electric wheels while the cockpit acts as a capsule to safely house the driver, allowing for tighter peloton formations and a team victory.” (Source: Mazda USA Media)

The Mazda KAAN was one of nine entries into the contest. Other entrants were the Audi A25, BMW Hydrogen Powered Salt Flat Racer, GM Chaparral Volt, Honda The Great Race 2025, Mitsubishi Motors MMR25, Mercedes-Benz Formula Zero, Toyota Lemans Racer and the Volkswagen Bio Runner.
