March 2009 Hybrid Sales Figures

Yesterday, automakers announced their March 2009 sales figures and the numbers were down significantly when compared to March 2008. However, the numbers weren’t surprising and there were even a few glimmers of hope among the sea of double digit declines.

The Toyota Prius is the best-selling hybrid in the United States but the vehicle’s sales were down 55% when compared to March 2008. Only 8,924 Toyota Priuses were sold in March 2008; this brings the year-to-date figure to 24,277. Last year, Toyota sold 42,907 Priuses in the first quarter. Toyota does not separate the sales of hybrid models of vehicles that are available in both hybrid and non-hybrid options.

The 2010 Honda Insight first became available on March 24 and the company sold 569 units. I am anxious to see how the Insight does in its first full month. There were 2,869 Honda Civic Hybrids sold in March 2009, down 20.8% from the 3,769 units sold in March 2008. Year-to-date Civic Hybrid sales are down 26.6%, much better than the loss seen by the Prius.

Unfortunately, Ford and Nissan did not separate their hybrid sales for the month.
