Hybrids Instead of Jets Head to Congress

It turns out that the CEOs of the Detroit 3 (or Big 3) auto manufacturers learned their lessons after they were flogged in blogs across the world for flying in private jets to beg for billions of dollars in bailout money. Instead of private jets, the CEOs are now driving to Congress. What better way to show that they have learned their lesson than to drive in a fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle?

GM CEO Rick Wagoner will be driving in a roomy Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid and Ford CEO will be taking the popular Ford Escape Hybrid SUV. Can you guess what hybrid Robert Nardelli of Chrysler will be driving? There is the Chrysler Aspen Hybrid or maybe even the Dodge Durango Hybrid. Oh wait, Chrysler scrapped the plans for those vehicles and is stopping production shortly after the vehicles were released.

According to an article that appeared on MSNBC.com, “Not to be left out, Chrysler said CEO Robert Nardelli will join his Detroit counterparts in driving to Washington, D.C., this week to seek federal loans. The company says in a statement that Nardelli will drive a fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to the congressional hearings.”

  1. When the earlier story broke, my son said, “How serious can they really be? They took jets!” and I agreed.

I have so many mixed feelings about bailing out the Big 3. On one hand, it will save a lot of jobs and keep people working, but yet it may mean more government rules and regulations within the auto industry.

    It’s so depressing…

  2. Like you, I also have mixed emotions. I was watching the hearings today and there was so much mention of regulation boards, regulation committees, etc. However, the economic impact of even one of the three failing us immeasurable. Definitely a tough situation.
