Ford F-150 SFE – Superior Fuel Economy

Ford published several press releases about the new Ford F-150 today; a common theme among all of the press releases was the eight percent fuel efficiency increase over the previous year’s model. Details on the new Ford F-150 SFE model were also released. SFE stands for superior fuel economy – what does Ford define as superior? How does “up to 21 miles per gallon on the highway†sound? I’m not sure that I would define that as superior.
The Ford F-150 SFE can achieve this superior fuel efficiency rating while still towing up to 7,500 pounds and will be available on the SuperCrew XL and XLT4×2 vehicles. “The 8 percent improvement in fuel economy across the entire lineup of the 8 F-150s is the result of using lightweight ultra-high-strength steel to lighten the truck up to 100 pounds versus the current model and aerodynamic refinements†(Source: Ford Motors.)
For comparison’s sake, the Chrysler Aspen Hybrid can tow about 6,000 pounds and has a 19 mpg city rating (the F-150 SFE has a 15 mpg city rating.)
