Flex Fuel Vehicles Available for Model Year 2009
Flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) can run on E85 in addition to standard petroleum-based gasoline. According to the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition (NEVC), the average price for unleaded in the United States is $3.67 today. The average price for E85 is $3.13 per gallon. If you are in the market for a new car, consider purchasing one of the following flex fuel vehicles available.
Chrysler
Chrysler Corporation just released its 2009 flex fuel vehicle lineup with models available under the Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep names. The 2009 Dodge Avenger, Grand Caravan, Dakota, Ram and Durango are available as a flex fuel compatible model. The Chrysler Sebring, Town and Country and Aspen as well as the Jeep Commander and Grand Cherokee are also available.
Ford/Lincoln/Mercury
For model year 2009, Ford Motors will make the following models available in a flex fuel version:Â Ford Crown Victoria, E-Series Commercial Van, Expedition, F-150, Lincoln Navigator, Lincoln Town Car and the Mercury Grand Marquis.
General Motors
Vehicles across several brands of the General Motors Company are available in 2009 with flex fuel capabilities. The Buick Lucerne, Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, HHR, Impala, Silverado and Tahoe as well as the GMC Savana, Sierra, Yukon and even the Hummer H2 can be purchased as a flex fuel model.
Mercedes-Benz
Right now, the NEVC website only shows that the 2009 Mercedes-Benz C300 Luxury and Sport versions will be available in model year 2009 as a flex fuel vehicle.
Identifying Flex Fuel Vehicles
Even if you are not in the market for a new vehicle, you can find a pre-owned car, truck or SUV that is flex fuel-capable. Available on the NEVC website, How to Read a Vehicle Identification Number, explains to consumers how to find the vehicle identification number (VIN) on their automobile and then use that information to determine if the car is E85 compatible.Â
The website has information for Chrysler, Ford, Lincoln, Mercury, General Motors, Isuzu, Mazda, Mercedes and Nissan models. It is important that you verify that the engine size matches up with the information on the NEVC website.
Due to the food shortages around the world, E85 is not without controversy as it is made in bulk from food sources (corn and other grains).
