February Hybrid Sales Figures

Overall, sales were down by nearly 40% in February 2009. Nissan sales were down 37.1% in February but sales of the sporty Nissan Z were up 33%. Lower gas prices and a new Z likely led to the increase in sales. This had me wondering how hybrid sales fared for February 2009. Unfortunately, Nissan did not break down the company’s hybrid sales for February 2009.
Toyota Motor Sales
Toyota sold 10,268 hybrids in February 2009 and Lexus sold 1,546 hybrids for a total of 11,814 hybrids sold for Toyota Motor Sales. Prius sales were down sharply; only 7,232 were sold in February 2009, which is down from 10,893 in February 2008. This represents a decline in sales of 30.8%. Year-to-date Prius sales are down 31.1%. Toyota did not break out the sale of the company’s other hybrid models.
American Honda
American Honda posted an overall decline of 38% but the fuel-efficient Honda Fit posted an increase in sales of 2.3%. Like the Toyota Prius, Honda Civic Hybrid sales saw a double-digit decline – 21.5% decrease in sales over February 2008. Year-to-date, Honda Civic Hybrid sales are down by 31.4% which is similar to the decline seen by the Toyota Prius.
The Honda Insight will go on sale soon and hybrid lovers have their fingers crossed that sales will be good for the vehicle that some have dubbed “the Prius killer.â€
