Environmental Defense Fund Weighs in on NYC Hybrid Taxi Issue
The injunction against the fuel-efficient vehicle taxi mandate set forth by the Taxi and Limousine Commission in New York City goes into effect today. In a decision by US District Court Judge Paul A. Crotty, a preliminary injunction was granted after a request by the Metropolitan Taxicab Board of Trade (MTBOT).
Shortly after the injunction was announced yesterday, the Environmental Defense Fund weighed in on the issue.
“The Taxi and Limousine Commission is not requiring auto manufacturers to raise their fuel efficiency standards, which is the role of federal law. It’s just requiring cab drivers to buy fuel efficient vehicles that are already on the market. The safety of taxi occupants has been traded off, illegally, for unachieved driver protection from assailants objectives.
Parittions are the bane of the taxi industry.
They hamper communication, violate federal safety law, preclude driver self defense, changing the attacks from ‘two dogs in a cage’ to ’shooting a fish in a barrel’.
I build auto partitions. They do not prevent or reduce fatal assaults, partitions INCREASE murder rates.
I was hoping this hybrid mandate resistance would trigger a phase-in of partition safety compliance… but alas… with each passing day there is less and less coverage of the partition hazard angle.
Judge Crotty went so far as to say safety wasn’t a factor in his decision.
