Ener1 Seeks Federal Loan for Hybrid Batteries

Earlier this week I reported that Ford America president Mark Fields announced that the company is facing a hybrid battery shortage, which may reduce the supply of its upcoming 41 mile per gallon Ford Fusion Hybrid. Today, Ener1 has announced that it has applied for a $480 million loan from the federal government so that it can boost its output of advanced lithium-ion batteries with the company’s EnerDel subsidiary

“EnerDel is the first and currently the only advanced lithium-ion automotive battery manufacturer in the U.S. EnerDel’s manufacturing facilities are based in Indianapolis and Noblesville, Indiana. If granted, the funds will enable EnerDel to double manufacturing capacity to produce 600,000 hybrid electric vehicle packs per year at its existing plant by 2011, and to build a second larger plant capable of producing battery packs for up to 1.2 million hybrid electric vehicles by 2015. It is anticipated that the projects would create more than 1,300 new jobs.” (Source: PR Newswire)
