Emirate Airline Plans Emvironment Flight
This is not an eco-friendly vehicle article; instead, I am writing about a different form of transportation - airplanes. I know that there have been a lot of green airline stories in the past few months but this one definitely piqued my interest. Dubai-based Emirate Airline is planning the inaugural Emvironment flight on December 15. The flight will be a direct flight from Dubai to San Francisco and will be the first “cross-polar green flight.”
The Emvironment flight is “the most environmentally-sophisticated route and trip possible to help save an estimated range of approximately 2,000 gallons of fuel and 30,000 pounds of carbon emissions on the 16-hour direct service.”
Certain measures have been put in place to ensure that these lofty goals are met including priority clearance for departure, the use of Russian and Canadian airspace for the most efficient path and continued optimal routing upon arrival in US air space.
In addition to the savings that may be achieved during the actual flight, waste from the patrons on the plane will be recycled.
“To ensure a more fuel-efficient route, the Emvironment flight will utilize the revised routes within Russian airspace — this special accommodation followed negotiations and was due to the support of the Russian Government. EK225 flight will depart Dubai at 8:55 a.m. on December 15th and land in San Francisco at 1:00 p.m. local time the same day.”
