Could a GM Merger Threaten the Chevy Volt?

2011 Chevrolet Volt Production Show Car

Talks about a General Motors merger have increased over the past week along with the volatility over the stock market. Some reports are showing that GM has been considering a merger with domestic rivals Ford Motor Company or even Chrysler. According to a report from Automotive News, General Motors stock is up 33% today; the jump is likely based on the conjecture regarding a possible merger for this automotive giant.

“Shares of GM, which had traded near 60-year lows last week, jumped to $6.52, up from a close of $4.89 on Friday. The gains came amid a rebound in the broad market tied to steps by the U.S. government and others to stabilize the banking system.” (Source: Automotive News)

If General Motors merges with either of these companies, it is unknown how the product lines will pan out. My initial reaction when I first saw the news was “Yikes, what will happen to the Chevy Volt?” After a bit of time reading up on the news of the merger discussions, I felt a bit more confident that regardless of General Motors future, the Volt would not be seriously affected. What are your thoughts on the topics?

  1. OK, what I want to know is how an electric car will reduce overall emissions. If anything, it will differ it from the tailpipe to the power plant. Unless we switch to nuclear power, these electric cars will not really help the environment. Not to mention our wallets. With more cars draining the electric grid, electric rates will soar, as we have already seen. Unless further research is done with alternative electricity sources, or the implementation of nuclear power, the Chevy Volt is quite useless.
