ComEd Meter Readers to Drive New Priuses

Fifty Chicago-based ComEd meter readers will be driving around in brand new Toyota Priuses. The company has added 50 Toyota Priuses to its vehicle fleet and ten of these have been converted to be plug-in hybrid models. ComEd is a leader in alternative fuel fleet vehicles with 63% of its fleet running on biodiesel, flex fuel, battery-electric hybrids, liquid petroleum gas and now plug in hybrids.
“These new vehicles not only use electricity to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions but may eventually be used as back-up power sources,” said Terence Donnelly, ComEd senior vice president of Transmission and Distribution. “Deploying advanced metering and other Smart Grid technologies will help us understand and manage impacts to the grid from plug-in electric vehicles but more importantly will improve reliability and enable customers to make more efficient choices about their electric usage.” (Source: PR Newswire)
Toyota does not have a plug-in hybrid Prius on the market but will reveal the 2010 Toyota Prius plug in hybrid at the North American International Auto Show on Monday.
