April 2009 Hybrid Sales Figures

On Friday, I posted a summary of the April 2009 auto sales figures. As was to be expected, the numbers were down across the board. The “winner†among the domestic automakers was Ford, which posted a 33% decline in sales when compared to April 2008. Ford sold a total of 2,299 hybrid models (Ford Fusion Hybrid, Mercury Milan Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Mercury Mariner Hybrid) in April of 2009. This represents a 21% increase over the company’s April 2008 hybrid sales.
In its first full month of sales, American Honda sold 2,096 Honda Insights. This is almost as much as all of Ford’s April 2009 hybrid sales combined. In addition to the Insight, Honda also reported sales of 3,361 Honda Civic Hybrids. This brings Honda’s April 2009 hybrid sales to 5,457 units.
Toyota’s overall April 2009 sales were down by 41.9%; this represents an increase of nearly 3% from the company’s March 2009 shares. I’m curious if the Honda Insight sales cut into the Prius sales, reducing Toyota’s overall sales figures. In April 2009, Toyota sold 8,385 Toyota Priuses. This represents a 61.5% decline of Prius sales when compared to April 2008. For comparison, in March 2009, Toyota sold 8,924 Toyota Priuses.

You should realize and note that for Ford, the Fusion and Milan Hybrids are new models just going on sale and just being introduced for sale while the Escape is aging without having undergone a serious revamp since its introduction as a hybrid.
Meanwhile, Toyota is set to intoduce the revamped Prius in the next several weeks and sales declines often occur immediately preceeding a significant model year change which the the 2010 Prius seems to be. And yes, the Honda Insight may have cut into sales as well.
[...] Honda sold 2,780 of the new Honda Insights in May 2009; this is up over the 2,096 Insights sold in April 2009. In other Honda hybrid news, 2,077 Civic Hybrids were sold. This is down, significantly, from April [...]
