April 2009 Auto Sales Figures
Another month, and another set of dismal auto sales figures have been announced. Unlike previous months, there were no positive sales figures posted in April 2009. The financial crisis in the U.S. continues and as Chrysler begins its bankruptcy process and General Motors is hanging on by a thread, consumers aren’t in a car-buying mood.
Domestic Automakers
Ford Motors is in the best financial position of the major domestic automakers but they posted a 33% sales drop in April 2009 when compared to April 2008. This is a pretty big improvement over March 2009 when the company posted a 42.1% decline. This puts Ford at a year-to-date decline of 41.5% when compared to 2008.
Chrysler LLC sold 76,682 units in April 2009, which is a 48.1% decline over April 2008. The constant news about Chrysler needing to forge a deal with Fiat to survive obviously came into play here as Chrysler’s sales were only down 39.3% in March 2009.
General Motors’ sales were down 44.7% in March 2009 but the company surprised everyone by posting a 33.2% decline in April 2009.
Imports
American Honda is the “winner†among the Japanese imports; the company sold 101,029 units in April 2009, which represents a 25.3% loss when compared to April 2008. Nissan sold 37.8% fewer vehicles and Subaru posted a 6.7% decline in sales.
In March 2009, Toyota’s sales were down by 39% but that figure jumped to 41.9% for April 2009. The company is now sitting at a 38.4% decline year-to-date.
